Uppsala University Jazz Orchestra (UUJO) is the first university big band in Sweden under proffessional leadership open for students from all faculties and university employees. UUJO is a permanent big band active in several concert projects every year, both at the university and for a general public. Our concerts range stylistically from classical big band repertoire to contemporary compositions and originals. We regularly cooperate with prominent guest artists.
Spring and fall concerts are usually held in the university Grand Auditorium and the traditional Christmas concert at a church in Uppsala center. We participate in other internal events at the university, as well as in national and international events.
You can engage UUJO for concerts, dance evenings and for smaller events where anything from pianotrio and up is suitable.
- UUJO has performed at jazzfestivals in Sweden and USA.
- UUJO is one of three ensembles with live music program at the Uppsala university. Together with the Academic Symphony Orchestra and the Choral Center we represent KUM– the College of Music in Practice – which among other events is has initiated the very popular concertseries ”Blue Monday” at the university hall.
- The former Vice-Chancellor of the Uppsala university – Bo Sundqvist – initiated the jazz department by taking contact with one of the leading jazzprofiles of Sweden – pianist and trombonist Ulf Johansson Werre, who accepted the challenge and has now been UUJO:s artistic leader since 2004.
